The school does not promote any field of singing in particular, we are purely a teaching facility and the whole thrust of our teaching is specifically under the heading of VOCAL FREEDOM.
Singing lessons take the form of individual one-to-one work and group classes where students learn from each other in a relaxed environment. One-day seminar/workshops also take place at the school where Bel Canto themes are explored in more depth and where performances on a stage or to the camera are worked on.
Exponents of Bel Canto singing display an ease, clarity and finesse in their delivery and a dedication to what the composer of a work actually wrote and intended. Hallmarks of lyricism, definition of the words and a calling which effortlessly draws a listener in are what make a Bel Canto Singers stand out from the vast majority of singers who are only interested in what sound they can produce and how loud they can make it.
Singing is taught in Bel Canto House through the art of storytelling. People are always surprised when they don't see a piano in the room when they arrive for the first singing lesson and when they're not given breathing exercises or vocal scales to practice at home.
This is because singing in Bel Canto House is taught in a natural, non-technical way where people's innate ability to tell stories is awakened and this is what makes the Bel Canto School of Singing such a unique and independent place.
Irish people don't need to be told what great and gifted storytellers they've always been, they're probably too busy spinning yarns to even realise.
And it is this exact same medium of the natural spoken word that is encouraged, enhanced and cultivated in the school; and which enables students to begin interpreting songs in a very personalised way where the meaning and sense of material is conveyed to an audience and where the sound of the voice is merely seen as the vehicle for their message and not as an end in itself.
All genres of music and vocal material are studied at the school; from Irish ballads to popular songs to operatic arias.
Founder Frank Merriman studied classical singing in London, England and Bologna, Italy.
Describing himself in an interview with an American publication in the mid 1990s as a freer of voices rather than as a teacher of singing. Frank Merriman has said that when you learn to free this one gift that you then free up all the other gifts that you have inside you.
